What is a LOLER thorough examination?
The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) place requirements on the safe use of lifting equipment.
A thorough examination is a systematic examination of lifting equipment carried out by a competent person to identify defects or deterioration that could affect its safe operation.
The examination is intended to identify problems before they present a risk to people using or working with the equipment.

If you are unsure whether your equipment requires a LOLER thorough examination, contact us and we can discuss the equipment and its intended use.
How often is a LOLER examination required?
The appropriate examination interval depends on the type of equipment, its use and the applicable examination scheme.
Some categories of lifting equipment and accessories are commonly subject to six-monthly examinations, while other equipment may be examined at longer intervals.
Where a written scheme or examination scheme specifies a particular interval, the examination should be carried out in accordance with that scheme.
What happens during a thorough examination?
The extent of the examination depends on the type of equipment and the risks associated with its use.
CSIS examines the relevant components and safety-critical features of the equipment and considers matters such as condition, deterioration, damage and other defects that could affect safe operation.
Where appropriate, relevant documentation and identification details are also considered.
Following the examination, we provide a report setting out the findings and identifying any defects or actions arising from the examination.
Clear inspection reporting
CSIS provides clear digital inspection reporting so that customers have a record of the examination and its findings.
Reports can identify:
Equipment details
Identification or serial numbers
Examination date
Examination findings
Defects or observations
Required actions where applicable
Next examination information
For customers managing multiple items or sites, we can also help provide a straightforward record of inspection dates and equipment information.
Independent inspection service
CSIS focuses on inspection and thorough examination rather than servicing or repair.
This allows us to remain independent when reporting the condition of lifting equipment and identifying defects.
We work with businesses, property managers, facilities teams, care providers, engineering companies, warehouses, plant operators and other organisations requiring statutory inspection services.
